Sacred

"Most addicting RPG game in ages"
Just when I thought I wasn’t going to be able to kill one more cow in diablo ii, this game comes along and saves me from the mindless repetition that diablo ii gave for me. Granted this game is good old hack and slash we all know and love but it does so with solid graphics, fluid movements, and crisp sound.
Graphics: 8/10
One thing I like about this game is that you can zoom in and out on your character depending on your preference in playing a game. The game looks best when viewed on the middle setting although it is nice to get an overhead view of the area you’re in before you go into battle with the largest zoom out mode. My complaint about the graphics is that when you zoom in the most, the only things that don’t become incredibly pixilated are the characters. Stationary items such as trees, desks, and other miscellaneous items become very uncomfortable to look at and a displeasure to the eyes. Other than that, the graphics are great. Spell effects are smooth and the punching combos are fluid and quite a joy to the watch. Overall, a solid game in the graphics department.
Sound: 7/10
The sound in this game is clear although it does sometimes get old listening to the monsters say the same thing and make the same noises. For instance, after about ten minutes of killing goblins in the first part of the game, you are going to be sick of listening to their silly chanting sounds and their death noises. Character voices and spell effects are solid and a joy to listen to. One thing I do like about the character voices is all the different things they say when they enter new regions of the world. Some of them are quite funny to listen too. I really like the music for this game, especially the opening music that is played on the main menu. It gets gripping when you go into combat and the music changes from peaceful to roaring in just a few seconds to highlight the tension of the situation. Overall, the sound is pretty good and nothing beats having your subwoofer thunk real loud when a 15 foot tall giant hits the ground!
Characters: 9/10
All the characters in this game are a lot of fun to play depending on your preference of character and some can be quite challenging. From the mighty gladiator to the adept battle mage, there are characters for people of all preferences and many different builds to keep the player occupied for hours.
Gladiator: This is your standard hard hitting melee fighter similar to the barbarian from diablo ii. He has a plethora of good skills that make him solid on the front line both taking damage and dishing out. My personal favorite skill of his is fist of the gods which allows him to raise his fist in an angry fury and smash the enemies in front of him, grinding them all to dust. This is one of my favorite characters and the one I am currently playing now.
Seraphim: Your holy warrior descended from the gods who goes around crushing her enemies in a thong! I found it funny the first time I loaded up the game and what she was wearing. Well besides her clothing (or lack thereof), she’s adept at combat and using her holy skills to damage her opponents. The seraphim doesn’t have the raw damage potential that the gladiator does, but she makes up for lack of raw damage in being much more agile and able to move around in combat much quicker.
Wood Elf: For those who liked the amazon from diablo ii, this will be the character you will want to play if you are a fan of ranged combat. To get the full advantage of the power of the wood elf, you need to sit back with your screen all the way zoomed out so you can see your enemies at an incredible distance away. This makes the early parts of the game very easy as many enemies will already be dead before they even get a chance to get near you to get a hit off. Fun character and has the potential to be very strong later in the game.
Dark Elf: Nothing beats the dark elves no matter what game you play. Coming from the dark, these fearsome warriors use agile blades and destructive traps to rain destruction upon their foes. Like the seraphim, the dark elf is a very agile character and relies on agility more than brute strength. His traps are fun to play around with although they don’t have the potential to be truly powerful later on in the game like his melee skills allow for him. Quite a good character overall.
Battle Mage: Sword and sorcery in one character is one thing that always makes an RPG fun. When I first saw him, I thought he would be able to cast spells than wade into combat like any of the other characters. I was sure mistaken. This guy is your typical mage in the terms of the amount of hit points he has and sitting in the back dealing damage. He might be viable in melee combat, but I haven’t found the right equipment yet to allow him to survive any length of time. Great skills that allow for obscene amounts of damage at the higher levels.
Vampiress: Definitely an original character and apparently one of the most powerful from what I have seen although I have not personally played her yet. A knight by day and a fearsome vampire at night, she renders her opponents with sharp claws and a bite to silence even the most powerful villains. Like the rest of the classes, the same skills are available to her and she is the next best melee warrior after the gladiator.
Gameplay: 10/10
I just love the gameplay on this game and how your character fights. The interaction with the other NPCs in the game is pretty good as there are a LOT of NPCs to interact with and a merchant every other screen as it would appear in some places. The one nice thing in this game is the amount of different items you can find and how most of them are completely random and end up with completely different stats. Unlike other RPGs where you have to go back to town to unload gear after every other monster slain, this game gives you a HUGE inventory to hold dozens and dozens of items so the constant running back to town runs are almost nonexistent. On top of this, they give you your own personal chest to put items you want to keep for later but don’t want to keep in your inventory. This is just like your personal stash from diablo ii and it works great for the amount of gear it can hold.
One of the things I like about sacred is the ability to buy a horse and even fight from it when the situation calls for it. The only problem is that you can’t use any of your special moves when you’re mounted on your horse so the continually mounting/dismounting routine does get old some of the time but isn’t a big deal most of the time. Horses don’t really last super far into the game as far as I am concerned because with the right gear and skills, you can easily get your movement speed up to and beyond what a horse will give you. Just another cool aspect that separates it from many other games out there.
Replay Value: 10/10
One of the keys to having a truly successful game is the ability to go back through and play it again. Like diablo ii, this is one of those games where you can just keep playing it through over and over again until you just get sick of the game in general. The amount of character builds and ways to play the game are very extensive and allows a lot of freedom when making your characters. This is definitely a very important aspect when looking into buying a game nowadays.
Overall: 9/10
This is one of the best games I have played in a long time and I will definitely be playing it for many months to come in the near future. It’s been a long time since a game gripped me like this and it’s fun to finally be immersed back in a game that is both thorough and complete. Just one word of caution for buying the game if you’re fussy about this sort of thing. The US release of Sacred has all the violence removed because the editors needed to tone it down so it could earn a teen rating by the ESRB system of rating games. If you’re one of those people who needs the full violence when playing a game, I suggest you import the UK version of the game which is identical to the US release, but it has all the full violence in it so you get stuff like lots of blood and dismemberment. A minor issue in my opinion when playing the game as you hardly notice the violence when playing with other people but some people have to have it so it’s there so you know which version to get. No matter which one you get, this is a must get if you are fans of games of this genre and this is one of the most engrossing RPGs i have played since diablo ii. So if you don’t have a copy of it now, go down to your local Electronics Boutique game store and pick yourself up a copy today!
